EPIPHYLLUM

Caring for an Epiphyllum, commonly known as an orchid cactus or leaf cactus, involves understanding its unique needs. Here are detailed care instructions:

Sunlight

  • Brightness: Epiphyllums thrive in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light can prevent blooming.
  • Placement: Place it near an east or west-facing window with filtered light. You can also use a sheer curtain to diffuse the light if necessary.

Watering

  • Frequency: Water the plant thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
  • Method: Water until it drains out of the bottom of the pot. Ensure the soil remains moist but not soggy. Avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent root rot.
  • Dormant Period: Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant's growth slows down.

Humidity

  • Level: Different to your normal cactus, Epiphyllums prefer moderate to high humidity levels (50-70%).
  • Enhancement: Increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing a tray of water with pebbles beneath the plant, or misting the leaves regularly.

Temperature

  • Range: Maintain a temperature between 15-24°C.
  • Avoidance: Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Do not expose it to temperatures below 10°C.
