Irisene

Iresine, also known as bloodleaf or chicken gizzard, is a vibrant and colourful houseplant prized for its striking foliage. Here's how to care for Iresine indoors:

Sunlight

  • Bright, Indirect Light: Iresine prefers bright, indirect light. Place it near a window with filtered sunlight or in a well-lit room with plenty of ambient light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but may scorch in intense, afternoon sun.

Watering

  • Even Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
  • Watering Method: Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can promote fungal diseases.

Humidity

  • Moderate Humidity: Iresine tolerates average indoor humidity levels but appreciates occasional misting to increase humidity. You can also place a humidifier nearby or use a pebble tray filled with water beneath the pot.

Temperature

  • Warm Temperatures: Maintain temperatures between 18-24°C during the day and above 55°F 13°C at night. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
